Two-Time Olympic Marathoner & Exercise Physiologist
Pete Pfitzinger is an American exercise physiologist, coach and author, and a two-time Olympic marathoner. He was the top US finisher at both the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (11th) and the 1988 Seoul Olympics (14th). At the 1984 US Olympic Trials he outkicked the heavily favored Alberto Salazar over the final 50 yards to win in 2:11:43; that year Track & Field News ranked him the #1 US marathoner and the Road Runners Club of America named him Male Runner of the Year. He is a member of the RRCA and Cornell Athletics halls of fame.
He holds a BA from Cornell University, an MBA from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, and an MS in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focused on lactate-threshold measurement, the physiological idea at the core of his training philosophy: build endurance through mileage and long runs, and raise race pace by lifting lactate-threshold pace.
Pfitzinger is best known for his Human Kinetics books, co-authored with Scott Douglas and Philip Latter: Advanced Marathoning (4th edition, 2025), Faster Road Racing, and Road Racing for Serious Runners. For over a decade he was a senior writer at Running Times, where his “Pfitzinger Lab Report” column translated exercise science into practical training guidance. He has worked in high-performance sport administration in New Zealand, including with High Performance Sport New Zealand and Athletics New Zealand, and today coaches marathon and half-marathon runners through Pfitzinger Coaching.
